An ATU is a type of wastewater system that introduces oxygen into the treatment tank to support bacteria that break down waste more efficiently than in conventional anaerobic systems. These more efficient systems are often required on smaller lots, areas with poor drainage, or near environmentally-sensitive locations like lakes and wetlands. Because they offer a higher level of treatment, ATUs are subject to stricter maintenance and reporting standards in Florida.

Who Needs ATU Maintenance in Florida?

If you own a home or business with an ATU in Florida, you are legally required to maintain it through a state-approved service provider. Florida law mandates a minimum two-year maintenance contract following the installation of any ATU. After that, owners are required to have a continuous service contract to keep the system operating safely and in accordance with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions About Aerobic Treatment Units in Florida

Do I need a service contract for my ATU?

Yes. Florida law requires ATUs to have a minimum two-year service contract at the time of installation, and a maintenance agreement must remain in place for continued operation for the lifespan of the unit.

What happens if I don't maintain my ATU?

Neglected ATUs can quickly go out of compliance, fail prematurely, or pollute nearby water sources. Failure to maintain your system can also result in hefty fines and penalties from the Florida DEP.

How often does an ATU need to be serviced?

At a minimum, twice per year for residential systems and four times per year for commercial systems. ACE's membership plan includes biannual inspections, which meet state requirements.

Can I switch my ATU service to ACE if another company installed it

Yes. We offer standalone membership options for any approved ATU system, regardless of who installed it.

What is telemetry, and do I need it?

Telemetry is a remote monitoring system that sends live updates from your ATU's control panel. While not mandatory for every homeowner, telemetry is included with all ACE installations and is strongly recommended for ongoing performance and peace of mind.
